Early California Hacienda | Del Mar, California
Situated on the plateau of “The Preserve at Del Mar” in Del Mar, California, this 7,000 square foot, 5-bedroom early California Style Hacienda is surrounded by 80 acres of permanent open space and expansive views of the natural coastal terrain of Southern California. The house is oriented to the west, with a vista of the Pacific Ocean and colorful sunsets. Breezes from the canyons below gently waft up through the home, providing a comfortable, open air living experience.
The home was conceived around a central courtyard, mimicking the private outdoor living spaces of the early California haciendas. The idea was to be able to come in from the motor court, through a large, carved wooden gate and be surprised by a lush garden with a native rock fountain and an olive tree acting as the entry foyer to the home. Once through the gate a path with large flagstone pavers leads to covered loggias. Low-lying roof overhangs shield from the hot southern California sun.
A casual, yet sophisticated home, with private rooms placed off a central courtyard, and large living areas that open out to the exterior spaces using large pocketing doors and windows was fundamental in the design. The great room opens to the rear yard and pool, the wet bar opens to the pool and entertainment area and the dining room opens into the private courtyard offering a sheltered dining experience outside.
Natural earth tone colors, locally sourced rock and cobble, and native landscaping, connect the home to the site. The stone used on the exterior was local to the terrain providing a rich, complimentary color palette to the home. The stucco finish was intentionally aged by intermittently adding exposed gravel, the same color as the native stone, to give the exterior an old-world aesthetic.
The interior palette is an assortment of natural slate, limestone, granite, and hardwoods unique to each section of the house, offering a warm, contemporary atmosphere timeless in its mood. All amenities are state of the art and modern, supporting a present-day lifestyle.
